Looking for the best fruit illustrations for your next design project? Tom Hovey, an illustrator, tells Design Week that he and his studio mates frequently travel to Bristol’s street fruit markets because “I enjoy cooking, and eating even more.” Hovey does the graphics for Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off, so you may have seen his work before. Hovey has been a part of the program since it was first on BBC Two ten years ago. Use these illustrations for designing spring patterns and summer patterns.
After he finishes drawing for the main program, he works on its spin-offs, which include Junior Bake Off, The Stand Up to Cancer Celebrity Bake Off, The Great American Bake Off, and a number of Christmas specials. You may get an idea of how much time Hovey spends illuminating fruit by adding to all of this Bake Off coloring books, PR campaigns, official Twitter emojis, as well as his commissions outside of the program.

For years, if not millennia, artists like Hovey have been depicting fruit, from still life fruit paintings from the Renaissance to kitsch cookbooks from the 1970s. In fact, fruit illustrations have been discovered on the walls of ancient Egyptian pyramids.
“Anything but fruit illustration”
The art of fruit drawing is as varied in 2020 as the foods it depicts. For branding projects, animation, menu and restaurant graphic design, editorial and print pieces, and in Hovey’s instance, even television work, illustrators are used.
Hovey acknowledges that before winning Bake Off, he was doing “everything but fruit drawing” and that it wasn’t always his thing. But now that it’s his “primary concentration,” he has drawn literally hundreds of cakes, pastries, buns, and bread loaves since the show’s 2010 debut. He claims that the procedure has mostly been the same over time.

Design Week quotes Hovey as saying, “I’m provided the images of the finished bakes from various perspectives so I can get a good idea of the whole thing. My role is to illustrate what contestants meant to create, not necessarily what they ended up baking.” If the bakes don’t go as planned, I have to figure out how to rectify the problems, add the missing pieces, and add more layers with the producers and bakers.
Although the illustrator’s techniques have changed, the brief may not have. He began working on Bake Off with a “actual real-life pencil,” but now uses a tablet and Photoshop to complete his job. His style, which he says was “formed out of painting murals on the walls of abandoned stores and trendy ad companies in Soho in the noughties,” was “refined and updated” by the show, according to him.

Marianna Fierro’s animated shorts
In her own practice, New York-based Fierro mostly concentrates on produce, and her website and Instagram are shrines to seasonal produce. She explains to Design Week that this is a result of her positive associations with food and sound mental health, as well as her childhood and ancestry in Italy.
Fruits and vegetables, according to the author, “come in so many different shapes and forms that they feel intrinsically quite accommodating.” “And the fruit aisle in the grocery store is frequently the most colorful thing you’ll see when you live in a big city, especially in the dead of winter.”
