The artwork in Magic illustrations: The Gathering is what really sets it apart from so many other video games I’ve played. Whatever you may think about metagames, damaged cards or decks, and formats you once adored but now detest, art will always exist. Over the course of its nearly 30-year existence, Magic Illustrations has employed over 400 artists, who collectively have created almost too much art to count.
Art is significant. The ability to use the potent spells they see represented or call fanciful creatures they couldn’t otherwise envision is what I think attracts new players the most. The breathtaking artwork of a player’s first set is often one of their earliest memories. Use the illustrations with the magic backgrounds to design magic flyer templates.
Having said all of that, I want to focus on the most incredible, distinctive, beautiful, and frightful pictures that Magic has to offer today. Let’s start now!
One of my all-time favourite forms of art is Evangeline. The artwork of Raymond Swanland is renowned for being extremely visually busy—in some instances, there is almost too much going on. However, it just functions differently here. In an energetic attitude, the many beautiful tones of green that are typical of more tranquil environments come to life.

Bitterblossom captures all the qualities of Rebecca Guay’s work that I adore. It has a lot of colour and a dreamy environment with razor-sharp humanoid features. The artwork itself appears to sing in a low level, and the back wings are exquisitely translucent. genuinely stunning.
I fell in love with Johannes Voss’ art because of this work. Although the background elements are a little blocky, the perspective is fantastic, and the stained glass in Gift of Orzhova is expertly done. The colours that are still slightly in the background stand out and glow in some way.
Even though this is from a Planechase card, I had to add it. It’s peaceful and beautiful, and it makes me think of scenes from Miyazaki movies—an old forest full of majestic animals and impossibly large plants. Llanowar exhibits flexibility in his portfolio that makes it obvious why he is Magic Illustrations’ most productive artist with over 400 pieces, but not being particularly reflective of Kev Walker’s distinctive style.

There is no artwork that better captures the immaculate art direction for the white Phyrexians than Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite by Igor Kieryluk. Despite having a tiny, exposed body, she seemed regal and powerful, the white porcelain complementing the red flesh underneath. Everything is here.
One of a few media that I want to draw attention to is Binding the Old Gods, a mahogany wood carving by Victor Adame Minguez that is neither a work of digital art nor a painting. There have been a few non-traditionally created sagas, but this one is unquestionably my favourite because of how vibrant the colours turned out and how distinct the different figures are while being constructed of the same material.

Every single ibis in the front has exquisite detail, in contrast to the ibises in the background that just shape. Daze is ideal as the lone figure looking off into the distance. And the water’s reflection gives this an entirely new depth.
