- The Story
The first thing to think about is what story you want to tell with your illustrations. Do you want to show how something looks? Or do you want to convey an emotion? For example, if you were illustrating a story about a girl who wants to be a ballerina, you might focus on her graceful movements as she dances. If you were illustrating a story in which a boy was sad because he couldn’t find his dog, you could emphasize the sadness by showing him looking for his pet. - Characters
Once you know what story you want to illustrate, you can start thinking about the characters. Who will be the main character? Will there be more than one? Once you know what type of illustration you want to make, you need to decide which characters will best fit those illustrations. In the case of a ballet dancer, you may want to include other dancers in addition to the main character.
