The first thing to think about is what story you want to tell with your illustrations. Do you want to show how something looks? Or do you want to convey an emotion? Once you know what type of illustration you want to make, you need to decide which characters will best fit those illustrations. In the case of a ballet dancer, you may want to include other dancers in addition to the main character.
